In this experiential exhibition, you’ll use a tablet-like device called a HistoPad to travel through time, from the time of the construction of the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral, a World Heritage Site, to the present day. As you walk around the venue, you can experience, through digital content, the cathedral’s construction, the coronation of Napoleon I, and restoration work , giving you a feeling of immersion as though you were inside the cathedral itself, enjoying a journey through history. This exhibition, which has toured around the world, is now premiering  into Japan. It will be held with additional special content exclusive to this exhibition.

The Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral, a World Heritage Site built on the Île de la Cité in Paris about 800 years ago, is considered a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. The cathedral, a historical symbol of Paris, suffered severe damage due to a fire on April 15th, 2019. Experts from a variety of fields came together to restore the cathedral, and the restoration, which has taken five years, is still ongoing, using the latest in information technology (IT) such as drones and CG analysis, as well as techniques honed by skilled craftspeople in the restoration of architecture and artwork.

This exhibition has toured around the world with the aim of helping guests experience the history of this World Heritage Site and the importance of preserving cultural assets, by using the HistoPad to see how the cathedral is regaining its light with the latest technology. The exhibition will also be held in Tokyo at the time the Notre-Dame de Paris reopens to the public in December 2024.

    Exhibition Overview

This exhibition allows guests to view, up close, wall projections of the large stained glass and models of statues of the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral, a World Heritage Site in Paris. When guests hold the HistoPad over the “time portals” (images that serve as entrances for time travel) installed throughout the venue, various scenes surrounding the cathedral will appear on the screen, transcending time and space. By touching points displayed on the screen in each scene, explanations can be both seen and heard, allowing guests to learn about and enjoy the value of World Heritage Sites, their historical importance, and advance restoration techniques, while interactively acquiring information through a game-like experience. Another feature of the exhibition is guests’ ability to view the exhibits on tablet devices, allowing each to interact with one another while experiencing the exhibits and sharing their thoughts. Special content exclusive to the Japanese venue will also focus on the cutting-edge science and technology used in the restoration work and reconstruction of the spire.
