Earthquakes are one dynamic activity produced by the planet Earth. The Deep-sea Scientific Drilling Vessel Chikyu, with a total length of 210 meters and possessing the world’s highest level of scientific drilling capabilities, is working to understand the mechanisms of earthquakes, which occur every day in various places around the world. This event will explore the grand scale and passion of geoscience research, through displaying a model of Chikyu, and introducing researchers working on the mysteries of earthquakes.
Chikyu is a Japanese scientific drilling vessel, operated by Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC). By drilling into the seafloor, it is possible to extract geological samples (cores) which contain sediment, rocks, and other materials. The year after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, a rapid drilling survey of the epicenter performed by Chikyu revealed various facts about the nature of the massive fault slip. The research is still ongoing, and some mysteries remain unsolved. To get closer to solving these mysteries, another drilling mission will begin off the coast of Tohoku this September.
