We are calling for proposals for an application or program that will create a realtime visualization of data taken from sources like the Internet, and display it on the Geo-Cosmos. Each time the work is displayed, its content should change according to the data used.

Contents of the proposal sheet

• Title and Your name
• Reference image
  A picture, sketch, CG or hand drawn picture of the work as being seen on Geo-Cosmos.
• Concept
  The intention and background of your idea.
• Appeal Point
  What you like the judging committee to focus on.
• Technical Notes
  Overviews about the data to be utilized, the way of data processing and the visualization.
  
• External Equipment Installation Configuration and System Diagram *optional
  If you need to use external equipment, indicate about the installtion and connections.
• Movie *optional
  Other than the proposal sheet above, we also accept videos in the case where music and/or other moving pictures are involved. Please upload the video on YouTube with Unlisted and provide the URL in the appropriate section of the application form.

Materials to be submitted for the Main judging

An actual program that will generate realtime data visualizations displayed on the "Geo-Cosmos".

The length of the work

• Please make sure that the work, no matter the length, no matter what time, can be screened without any problems. (for example: "a work that can only be screened a specific time everyday", "a work which the audience needs to watch for a very long time in order to understand" will be deemed as inappropriate.)
• In the main judging, the submitted works will be screened for about 5 mins on the Geo-Cosmos and then the evaluation will begin.

Playback method on Geo-Cosmos

• The work can be displayed using a Windows PC prepared by Miraikan, to which Geo-Cosmos is connected as an external display.
  When the program runs in full-screen mode, Geo-Cosmos' system automatically converts an equirectangular image for the spherical display.
• Please note there is a delay of 9 frames (30fps) from playback to projection the Geo-Cosmos.
• In the main judging, the work will be played from the applicant's PC that will be connected to the Geo-Cosmos. Both Windows PC and Mac computers can be used to connect to the Geo-Cosmos. The computer needs to be able to support HDMI 4K output.
  After the preliminary screening, the applicants will perform a playback test using the Geo-Cosmos' system to confirm that the program is running smoothly.
  If it is not possible for the applicant to bring a PC* for the test, the program will be installed to a PC that Miraikan will prepare. *When the work that receives the Grand Prize is being screened on the Geo-Cosmos as a permanent content, it will be reporoduced from a PC especially for this program.

Network environment

• It is possible to connect to the Internet via NAT.
• Upon confirmation, only communication port necessary to connect to a domain or IP address will be made available for the work screening.
• It is not possible to access the PC for screening from the Internet.

About external input devices

For live content, as part of the work, cameras, sensors, microphones, etc. that the applicant will prepare, can be installed inside Miraikan as external input devices.

• About the installation place
  Devices can be installed in the following places: oval bridge, catwalk, hanging baton facing the symbol zone, right and left walls. For more information please look at the diagram in the application documents.
  For safety reasons, it is not possible to install devices in places where Mirakan’s visitors have access.
• About the installation method
  Any necessary installation work will be, in principle, performed by the applicant. However, to ensure safety and for the sake of facility maintenance, some of the necessary work may be performed by Miraikan.
• About the connection to the screening system
  Wired LAN or the I/O ports of the PC's USB, Audio etc.
  Wireless connections such as WiFi or Bluetooth are not allowed.

However, it is not possible to install an external input device in the following cases.

• In case that Miraikan deems that the installation of the external input device violates the safety of the building and of the visitors.
• In case that the external input device interferes with the aesthetics of the area around the Geo-Cosmos and of the exhibition space of Miraikan.

Operating conditions after the Grand Prize award

• The dedicated PC is set to start before opening time of Miraikan and shut down after its closing.
• The program of the work automatically starts at the startup of the PC, and shifts to the state where the automatic screening is possible.
• Screening of the work will be done automatically according to the screening schedule.
• The screening of the program starts/ends by switching inputs between the PC and other video sources on Geo-Cosmos. Therefore the program of the work should always send the video output during the PC runs.
• Miraikan will control the schedule setting after the Grand Prize is decided. However, depending on the content of the winning work the recipient may be asked to contribute to the work of setting up the content.
• The work will be screened for one year.

Idea category

In the idea category, we are calling for proposals of activities or events that fully exploit the potential of the Geo-Cosmos and the Symbol Zone exhibit space. We are looking for ideas that will explore the possibilities Miraikan as a public space offers, and take full advantage of the area around the Geo-Cosmos which is designed to make us feel the Earth and to think about our future.

Final presentation for Main judging

Applicants who passed the preliminary screening will have a presentation at Miraikan.

• Please prepare presentation materials in appropriate format (PowerPoint, keynote, PDF etc.)
  
• There are no restrictions on the form or number of pages of the presentation document. However, the presentation should be no more than 10 minutes per person (the allocated time is 15 minutes including Q & A per person)
