ジオ・コスモス

「ジオ・コスモス」は、日本科学未来館のシンボル展示であり、世界初の「地球ディスプレイ」です。宇宙から見た輝く地球の姿を多くの人と共有したいという館長毛利衛の思いから生まれました。直径6m、有機ELを用いた世界に類のない高精細球体ディスプレイは、1000万画素を超える高解像度で宇宙空間に輝く地球の姿をリアルに映し出します。

「ジオ・コスモス」は、球面上に上下左右が切れ目なくつながる球形の映像を映すことができる、特殊な映像デバイスです。球形であるがゆえに、映像をあらゆる方向から眺めることができ、平面映像のように正面が存在しません。そこには従来の平面ディスプレイとは異なるとてつもない自由、そして新しい映像表現の可能性があります。このようなデバイスは、常設のものとしては世界中を見渡しても他になく、唯一無二のデバイスと言えます。

科学情報を視覚化し、感性に届く表現によって共有することで、今の地球、今の自分についての「知」を深め、未来のビジョンをともにつくり上げることを目指すプロジェクトです。地球の生態系のなかのさまざまな生命と自分との“つながり”に目を向け、今ある豊かな地球を未来につないでいくために何をすべきか考えていきます。
ジオ・コスモスは、「つながり」プロジェクトの基幹ツールで、地球に関する研究データやアーティストの表現、また世界中の人々からのアイディアをとりこみ、つながりを軸とした新しい地球像を描いていきます。

Geo-Cosmos

Geo-Cosmos is the world’s first "Earth" display and the symbol exhibit of Miraikan.
The exhibit reflects Miraikan's Chief Executive Director's (Mohri Mamoru, the first Japanese astronaut) wish of to share with all people the view of the shining Earth as seen from space. This unique display is a sphere six meters in diameter, made of organic LED (OLED) with unparalleled high resolution exceeding 10 million pixels delivering a real-like view of the planet Earth.

Geo-Cosmos allows displaying continuous spherical video content on its surface. Since the display is spherical, it doesn’t have any privileged orientation, and its content can be seen from any angle. This quality offers freedom that cannot be found in traditional flat displays, and invites artists to explore new possibilities of visual expression. It is the only device of this type in the world.

About the "TSUNAGARI" Project

The Tsunagari project's aim is visualizing scientific data and sharing it in a way that appeals to the senses in order to deepen our understanding of the Earth and ourselves, and create a vision for our future.
By turning our attention to various life forms living on Earth and their connections to us, humans, it makes us consider what needs to be done to preserve the riches of our present Earth for future generations.
Geo-Cosmos, the fundamental tool of the Tsunagari project, displays scientific data visualizations, artists’ expressions, and draws a new worldview based on ideas received from people from all over the world and centered around the concept of Tsunagari.
