古代技術との対話

唐招提寺平成の大改修

世界遺産である「古都奈良の文化財」のひとつ、759年に鑑真和上により創立された唐招提寺。その金堂の大改修は、阪神淡路大震災後を契機に耐震性能の確保を目指し、1998年から12年の歳月をかけて行なわれました。このプロジェクトは、古建築の改修において、はじめてコンピューターを駆使した現代建築の「構造解析」の技術を採用し、古代の技をもつ職人による金堂の鴟尾(しび)を忠実に復元するなど、さまざまな時代の最高の技術が結集して実現されました。
1200年以上も前に建てられた金堂の改修では、建物の全てを一旦解体し、部材を調べ、構造を解析し、使えるものは残し、使えないものは伝統的技術を持つ職人たちの手により復元されました。当時の作った人は存在しなくても、古代の技術と対話しながら、残された部材や道具を読み解き、オリジナルへの敬意を込めて、現代に生き返らせ未来へとつないでいくのです。
今回の補強部材は未来の修理の時に、改めて最適な方法を採用できるように、全て外せるようになっています。変えないための技術、これがまた、何百年か先の技術者へのメッセージとなるのです。


Major Repair of the Toshodaiji Temple in the Heisei Era

Toshodaiji Temple was established by the Chinese Buddhist priest Ganjin in 759 and is one of “the cultural assets of the ancient capital Nara” and is one of the World Heritage sites. The major repair of the Kondo (Main Hall) of Toshodaiji, which was prompted by the Great Hanshin Earthquake, took place for twelve years from 1998 for the purpose of enhancing the quake-resistant performance.
The “structural analysis” technology of modern architecture leveraging computers was used for the first time in a project of repairing an ancient construction. The best technologies of various eras came together as seen in the example of accurately reproducing Shibi (ornamental ridge-end tiles) of the Kondo with a craftsman who keeps ancient skills. In the refurbishment process of the Kondo which was built more than 1,200 years ago, the entire building was first taken down.All the members were then inspected and the ones which could be reused were maintained and those which could no longer be used were reproduced by the craftsmen with skills in traditional techniques. Even though the crafs men who originally built the construction no longer exist, the technology has been revived in present day and will be passed on to next generations through the dialogue with ancient technologies and through the interpretation of the remaining members & tools and with the respect for the original.
The members which were reinforced during the recent repair were assembled in such a way that they can all be taken apart to accommodate an optimum technique at the time of future repairs. The technology for not making changes will be the message for professionals several hundred years from now.
