Beginning in the Edo period, “secret box puzzles” created using the representative traditional Japanese craft techniques of marquetry and wood joinery began to spread throughout Japan, carried from Hakone by travelers passing through the Hakone checkpoint. And as the producers and the puzzle enthusiasts competed against one another and tried to outwit each other, the puzzles grew increasingly complex and began to move beyond the realm of toys, eventually coming to be considered works of art. Recognized as a masterpiece, this puzzle is made up of 106 pieces of shuri cherry wood which changes color over time, giving the pagoda an increasingly more dignified appearance with the passing of time.
