Saki-ori

Exhibition cooperation: Toshio Sato

Saki-ori is a weaving technique in which worn-out kimono and cloth are torn into thin strips and woven into cloth once again. Various types of cloth are mixed together in saki-ori, reflecting differences in region and culture. While it is simple and rustic, it also exudes a unique sense of beauty. It is a skill and aesthetic created by people and societies that have long emphasized reusing goods till the very end of their life cycles, rather than discarding them.
