The Festival Platform Awards of the 23rd Japan Media Arts Festival [calling for entries from Tuesday, September 17, 2019]

The Festival Platform Awards were established for works to be displayed in a special exhibition, in collaboration with the organizations making up the festival platform for the 23rd Japan Media Arts Festival.
We are calling for works that make use of the characteristics of the two spherical display systems at Miraikan, the Geo-Cosmos and the Dome Theater.
Entries will be accepted between Tuesday, September 17 and Friday, November 29. The works of award winners will be shown during the Exhibition of Award-Winning Works during the Japan Media Arts Festival.

The Two Spherical Display Systems

There are two spherical display systems at Miraikan. One is the Geo-Cosmos, the symbol exhibit of the museum, and the other is the Dome Theater, a full-dome, 3D video system. They each have different shapes, offering different types of content and enjoyment, but are the same in that they are both designed for spherical video images. The only difference between the two is that one is designed to be viewed from the outside of the sphere, and the other is designed to be viewed from the inside.
The globe-like display enables viewers to change positions to see the content, which affects the way they interpret and experience it. With the Geo-Cosmos, viewers are free to choose a viewpoint, and move around as they experience the video images. Inside the Dome Theater GAIA, viewers sit in a fixed position to experience a sense of immersion surrounded by video and sound.
Spherical video images offer a new platform, and attention will focus on movies that make full use of the characteristics of Geo-Cosmos and Dome Theater to establish original categories in video images.

Video Image Concept

"Sharing a New World: From Square to Spherical"
Transitioning from square planes to spherical spaces. Humankind is attempting to free itself from the longstanding, static limitations of two-dimensional planes, to acquire a new form of spherical (three-dimensional) visual expression.
As 360-degree cameras, virtual reality, and other new platforms appear, the potential of video expression continues to expand. We ask applicants to use these new spherical displays to depict the world that unfolds around us without dividing it into sections, and pioneer the portrayal of new perspectives that change our awareness of our planet.

About the Japan Media Arts Festival Contest

The Japan Media Arts Festival is a comprehensive festival of Media Arts (Media Geijutsu in Japanese) that honors outstanding works from a diverse range of media - from animation and comics to media art and games. The festival gives awards in each of its four divisions: Art, Entertainment, Animation, and Manga. It also provides a platform for appreciation of the award-winning and other notable works. Since its start in 1997, the festival has recognized significant works of high artistry and creativity, and in addition to a yearly Exhibition of Award-winning Works, has held other events, such as symposiums, screenings, and showcases.
The 22nd Festival received 4,384 entries from 102 countries and regions around the world, demonstrating continuing evolution as an established annual international festival. Award-winning Works are exhibited both within Japan and abroad through various projects and events organized by The Agency of Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan to develop and promote the creation of Media Arts, through related support programs and promotional activities. The festival aims to look further into the next generations.
