Overview of the Renewal
New Exhibitions & Dome Videos, Updated Restaurant & Services
Miraikan - The National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, after closing for refurbishment of the entire museum from Thursday, October 1 this year, will have a grand reopening on Friday, April 23, 2027. In addition to new permanent and special exhibitions where visitors can experience the latest science and technology and new dome movies, some services will also be renewed, such as some of the permanent exhibitions and the restaurant. Miraikan is evolving into an even more fascinating and accessible museum.
Since its first opening in July 2001, Miraikan has been beloved by many visitors, with the total number of visitors reaching 20 million in May 2025. Due to the building and exhibitions aging over the 25 years since first opening, Miraikan will close for approximately six months beginning October 1 this year, and focus on refurbishment. For the Grand Reopening in April next year, there are plans to reveal a variety of exhibitions and services, not just simple updates to the facilities. We aim to be a space that stimulates intellectual curiosity and creates new discoveries and discussions through visitors’ experiences at the museum.
Key Exhibitions and Services Planned to Open
・New permanent exhibitions based on themes, such as “genomes” and “brains”
・Special exhibitions proposed and planned by Miraikan
・New video programs at the Dome Theater, where visitors can enjoy full-dome, 3D videos, and a planetarium
・Update to the original partner robot, “Keparan”
・Renewal of the children’s Curiosity Field, where children and parents can experience together
・A restaurant and café based on a new concept, as well as a more expansive museum shop
・Update guidance signs throughout the museum to a consistent and more intuitive design
Details on the refurbishment will be provided in future press releases and on the official Miraikan website and social media. Look forward to the new Miraikan you will encounter in April next year.
