The Debue of the Reborn Geo-Cosmos [Wednesday, April 20, 2022]

Now brighter and more vibrant with 10,362 LED Panels

Geo-Cosmos before panel replacement

Miraikan will reopen the spherical display “Geo-Cosmos” on Wednesday, April 20, 2022. The exhibit was temporarily closed for maintenance since October of last year. Come experience this symbol exhibit of Miraikan, renewed with cutting-edge LED panels, and video system to achieve a greater range of color and brightness for more vibrant images.

The maintenance process involved lowering the Geo-Cosmos from its suspended position of nearly 12 meters, for the first time in 11 years, to replace the existing OLED panels on its 6-meter diameter surface with 10,362 new LED panels and associated wiring done entirely by hand. The panels compatible with HDR (High Dynamic Range) greatly expands the range of brightness that can be expressed. In addition, a wider color gamut realizes richer color expression. The framerate, or the number of images which can be displayed in video footage per second, has been increased two-fold, resulting in a much smoother video playback. These improvements in quality offer visitors an even more realistic vision of our planet, as well as a video that shows the exceptional performance of the new LED panels.
