“A gift from Malaysia”

By changing our consumption habits and by promoting recycling we can leave a better environment for future generations.

Scenarios | MALAYSIA

Jee Cheng

In Malaysia, where rates of consumerism is high and recycling rates are low, it is important to take action now to conserve the environment and to appreciate our time with loved ones before they become nothing but a part of our regretful memories. If we continue to purchase items without limit, that may harm the environment, and may cause the extinction of certain plants and animals, never to be seen by future generations. With this scenario, two important things can be achieved with 1 action as we can preserve the environment and create memories with our loved ones.

Motivation behind this scenario

Malaysia's recycling rate is still far from the target of 22% by 2020 set by the government. The current rate is only 10.5% in comparison to other developed countries who have reached more than 40%. While many Malaysians are aware of the importance of the environment, their response has not failed to reach the expected level. Malaysia is now aiming to become a society that practices the 3Rs, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. So, activities to educate students -- the future generation of Malaysia -- on the protection of the environment are taking place nationwide.

People nowadays consume products and energy in an unprecedented rate which has a big impact on Earth's environment and natural resources. The main message of this work is "We must rethink the way we consume if we want to leave a clean Earth for the future". This work is addressed to people in their 20s and 30s who have started earning their own living, and it would be great if this becomes an opportunity for them to rethink consumption. The highlights of this work are a fast-forward to a future cleaner Earth and the moving finale.
