"Beyond Fibers" Exhibition Content

Japan is proud of its world-class fiber technology and its research. Its applications vary widely from sports and information technology to space development and clinical medicine. The latest fiber technology is introduced in this exhibition, starting with fiber research which supports the field of sports which keeps challenging the limits of human ability.

With the memory of its recent landing on Mars still fresh, the test model of the airbag actually used for the Mars Exploration Rover, NASA's new spacecraft for Mars exploration, will be introduced at this time for the first time in Japan. Also, the display of shoes and sportswear worn at the Athens Olympics by athletes such as, Shingo Suetsugu from Track, Koji Murofushi from Hammer Throw and Kosuke Kitajima from Swimming will be displayed along with their comments and stories behind the development of the product.
Moreover, gear made for athletes with physical disabilities that have advanced with the use of fiber, such as wheelchairs used for competitive sports like wheelchair basketball and artificial legs for track and field, will be introduced. Wheelchair basketball is now widely known from movies and MANGA (comics) and also from the fact that the number of the participants of the sport is increasing even among those people who are able-bodied.
Furthermore, there will be a special section where you get to actually experience the mechanism of "optical fiber," which has become readily familiar to our lives when you think of items of innovative "fiber" that are nearby.

Architect, Jun Aoki designed the site and designer Hideki Nakajima was in charge of the graphics for displays. You can experience fiber's new side and fiber technology, including the latest research and the link between sports and fiber technology.
