1. Theme

"Time on the Globe"
Image contents 15 seconds long will be screened on "Geo-Cosmos" as a time signal


2. Qualification

Applications from any company, organization, group or individual of any age, gender, occupation or nationality are accepted.
Applicants must be capable of creating images in the designated format after passing the preliminary review.


3. Flow of review

Preliminary review: Primary review is implemented on application documents.
Applicants who pass the preliminary review will be asked to create images that are screened on Geo-Cosmos.
Main review: Review is implemented by actually screening the works on Geo-Cosmos and prize winners are selected.


4. Application method

Please enter necessary information in the application form   and register the following necessary items via the special website for this contest (we do not accept applications via mail).

Please rename the file: [name]_[title].png. Sample: [yamadataro]_[chikyuunojikan].png
All works applied for the contest (image or sketch) will be panel-exhibited in "Earth Camp 2015," an event hosted by Miraikan.

Storyboard that explains the story or the flow of scenes (free style, using about one A3 sheet in portrait orientation) *required
Please also explain the music and sound effects in terms of scenes used and how they are used.

Video image (optional)
We also accept video submissions if there is a need to show the music, rotating images or the transition of images over time.
Please upload the video on YouTube and enter the URL in the designated field of the format.


5. Schedule

Application:
Application period: June 10 (Wed) - August 17 (Mon) at 18:00 JST

Late August
Preliminary review :
Selection is implemented based on documents and storyboards.

Early September
Notification of the results of the preliminary review : All applicants will be notified of the results.

Early September
Technical briefing :
Technical briefing for the actual creation of images will be held at Miraikan for those who passed the preliminary review (participation is not mandatory). *Applicants must pay their transportation costs to reach Miraikan.

From early September to early October
Image creation: Image work screened on Geo-Cosmos will be created.
The period of creation is scheduled to be about one month, from early September to early October.

Main review:
Review is implemented by actually screening the works on Geo-Cosmos, and prize winners are selected.

Announcement and award ceremony : Tuesday, October 13, 2015. An award ceremony will be held in Miraikan.

From late October
Presented to the public :
The Grand-Prize-winning work will be screened on Geo-Cosmos as a permanent exhibit.


6. Creation of video

Applicants who pass the preliminary review and become prize winners will be asked to create images that are screened on Geo-Cosmos following the creation format explained below.

(1) Image format
Image is created in the form of a flat-screen image.
Conversion into the format for screening on Geo-Cosmos will be implemented by the staff of Miraikan.
Map projection method: Equidistant cylindrical projection

(2) Data format
Image data: Still image serial-number files in PNG format
The replay frame rate should be on a "best effort" basis, and is approximately 15–30 frames/sec.
Assuming replay at 30 frames/sec, 450 frames will be necessary.
Music data: 2ch stereo, WAV, AIFF, Apple, lossless
* Sampling rate: 48k, 16bit

(3) Resolution
Please create at a resolution of 4K × 2K (3840x2160)

(4) Color reproducibility and brightness
While the shades of colors used are unrestricted in general, slight adjustment may be necessary for white in order to protect the panel.
In addition, shades of some colors change when screened on Geo-Cosmos, such as blue. In such cases, the applicants may confirm and adjust the color shade (not mandatory, and applicants must pay their transportation costs to reach Miraikan).


7. Awards

Grand Prize (1 winner), Prize (5 winners) * The number of winners may not reach the predetermined number of prizes.
Work that wins the Grand Prize will be screened on "Geo-Cosmos" as a permanent exhibit for one year.

(1) Grand Prize
- The work will be screened on "Geo-Cosmos" as a permanent exhibit for one year.
- The image work will be released on the official website and Facebook page of Miraikan and YouTube (Miraikan official channel).
- The work may be screened in museums of science and art centers abroad with which Miraikan shares contents (Miraikan has screened at an event hosted by Ars Electronica Linz of Austria).

(2) Prize
- About 200,000 yen production cost will be paid to the applicants who proceed to the main contest and produce content that will be actually played on the Geo-Cosmos.
- The image work will be released on the official website and Facebook page of Miraikan and YouTube (Miraikan official channel).

9. Screening criteria

(1) Theme: Whether the work covers the theme
(2) Expressiveness: Whether it reaches the perfection level, level of beauty, originality and novelty as video expression
(3) Technical capability: Whether it capitalizes on the characteristics of spherical display, and considers the fact of being displayed on a spherical surface

11. Points to keep in mind

(1) Content of submitted entries
- Use of the name of a particular organization, name of the creator, logo, or factors of any commercial nature is not permitted.
- Expressions that are offensive to public order and morals, including excessive violent or sexual expressions, are not permitted due to the nature of being screened in a public facility.
- As for data used at the time of application and for video being created after the preliminary review, applicants are asked to submit reference materials, materials used as grounds, or a list of these materials in advance. Miraikan may confirm the credibility of the data submitted.
- Please give due consideration in the copyright, trademark right, portrait right, etc. of images, videos, data, texts, music, etc. used so that the work will not infringe the rights of Miraikan (Japan Science and Technology Agency). When using photos or logos for which a third party holds rights, applicants may be asked to submit an approval document from data creators and copyright holders where necessary. Please also note that the submitted work may be screened or edited as explained above. Any trouble arising with a third party who holds the rights should be resolved under the responsibility of the applicant.

(2) Payment of production cost
- When the payment cost is paid to an individual, because this falls under "reward for music composition" or "reward for designing" as mentioned in Article 204, Paragraph 1, Item 1 of the Income Tax Act, withholding income tax at the rate of 10.21% (including the special income tax for reconstruction) is withdrawn at source at the time of payment. This withholding income tax may be refunded by going through a tax return procedure (the specific procedure will be explained after the notification of passing the preliminary review).
- For those who reside abroad for a long period (one year or more), those who are residing in Japan for a short period (less than one year) for reasons such as studying in Japan, or a foreign corporation that does not have a branch office/business base in Japan, foreign withholding tax at the rate of 20.42% (including the special income tax for reconstruction) is withdrawn at source at the time of payment. However, this foreign withholding tax may be exempted or reduced depending on the country of residence or the country to which the cost is paid (the specific procedure will be explained after the notification of passing the preliminary review).

(3) Attribution of rights
- The copyright for the video created in "6" above is retained by Miraikan.
- If the applicant wishes to show still images or footage of video shown on Geo-Cosmos via the Internet or other means, the applicant should make an application to Miraikan in advance.
- The copyright for the data of work at the time of application is retained by the applicant as a general rule. However, Miraikan may use the information for the purpose of the review of entries in the Geo-Cosmos Content Contest and for the announcement/publicity of the content winning the prize, and applicants give consent to this.
- The work will be screened, broadcast, recorded, edited and processed through activities hosted or co-hosted by Miraikan, including this contest. Applicants should not exercise the copyright in this regard. This includes cases such as activities implemented outside Miraikan and when Miraikan offers contents.
- As for the copyright of the data of musical composition used, when musical compositions are newly composed for this work or being unpublished, the composer of the musical composition retains the copyright. However, Miraikan can use it free of charge when using it as a Geo-Cosmos content.

(4) Other
- Please note that application documents are not returned.
- Work that is submitted for entry in other contests can also be used.
- A single applicant may submit up to three works.
