Questions on Miraikan

Q1. What kind of Science Museum is it?

Future, Information Science and Technology for Society and Life Science). Our concept is to allow people to become familiar with science through participation/experience-based exhibits and through dialogues with scientists, engineers, interpreters and volunteers.

Q2. Do we get to meet the director?

A2. Dr. Mohri is extremely busy, but your ideas will still reach him, so if you have any comments or requests, please feel free to tell our staff.

Q3. Can small children enjoy the museum?

A3. Basically the target ages are for junior/high school and over, but since there are participation-based exhibits and robot demonstrations, there are visitors of pre-school age.

Q4. Can you still enjoy a visit without understanding Japanese?

A4.The explanations for almost all the exhibits are offered both in Japanese and English.

Q5. Are there any guides?

A5. The museum is an independent tour-based facility so each visitor can freely tour the museum. If there are any questions on the exhibits, there are interpreters (exhibit docents) and volunteers on each floor, so please contact them. They will provide detailed explanations.

Q6. In what route should we look at the exhibits?

A6. There are no suggested routes but a one approach would be to get a museum overview and  go first to the 5th floor, walk through, then the 3rd floor.

Q7. How long does it take to tour the museum?

A7. It will take about 2 hours, but it may be better to give yourself extra time if you will be enjoying the theater.

Q8. On Which days is it open for free?

  • May 5, during the term of "Child Welfare Week" for ages 18 and under
  • "Respect-for-Senior-Citizens Day" for ages 65 and over

Questions on the Exhibits

Q1. What is the Dome Theater?

A1. You can enjoy dramatic images on the dome shape screen. After you purchase your entrance ticket, please take a ticket indicating the order of seating on the 6F. (Capacity 112/You cannot leave or enter during the program.)

Q2. Please tell me about the robot demonstrations.

A2. ・ASIMO: 11:00~11:10, 14:00~14:10 Please understand that there may be changes with the schedule for certain reasons.

Questions on the Museum use

Q1. Are there rentals for baby strollers and wheelchairs?

A1. Please ask staff at the Help Desk to use them.

Q2. Is it possible to enter the museum with pets?

A2. We are sorry but we do not allow any kind of pet in the museum. We also do not keep them so please be careful. However, assisting dogs for people with disability are allowed.

Q3. Is it OK to film or take pictures in the museum?

A3. Yes, it is OK. However, we ask you not to photograph in some exhibits and inside the Dome Theater.

Questions on Friends of Miraikan(Tomonokai)

Q1. Tell me about Tomonokai.

A1. It is a free pass good for a year and it is 1,200 yen for individual members and 2,400 yen for family members. You get to participate in the events held by Tomonokai. Also, there are discount services available at the restaurants and the Museum Shop. For enrollment and inquiries, please contact the person in charge of Tomonokai.

Q2. What should I do if I lose my membership card?

A2. Please let Tomonokai know. We will reissue the card for free.

Questions on touring in large groups

Q1. Where can groups eat?

A1. The orientation room on the 1F can be used for free if reserved beforehand. In that case, each individual must clean up behind them.

Q2. Is it possible to order lunches?

Orders for lunch boxes are taken at the restaurant on the 7F. Prices range from 840 yen - 2,000 yen (orders will be accepted from 10 servings of lunches and over) and must be ordered 3 days in advance of visiting the museum.

Q3. Are group reservations only for rainy days possible?

A3. Yes, we do take in reservations only for rainy days. However, please be sure to contact the museum for cancellations, first.

Q4. We would like to have lunch outside if the weather is nice, but are there any nice places?

A4. There are the Takinohiroba (The Waterfall Square) (near Telecom Center station) and the Aomi Kita Futo Park (near the Museum of Maritime Science).

Q5. Are there parking spaces for buses?

A5. There is a parking lot for buses within the museum site. It is 3,000 yen per bus (without reservation).

Questions on Dome Theater GAIA

Q1. What is the program schedule?

A1. The schedule is as follows:

Q2. Is the schedule based on advance reservations?

A2. No, it is not based on advanced reservations. People visiting the museum may pick up a ticket to attend a program showing, on a first-come-first-served-basis. Groups should also take this into consideration.

Q3. How can I get a reserved seat ticket?

A3. After you purchase your admission ticket on the 1F as you enter the museum, you can pick up your reserved seat ticket on the 6F.
All tickets for that particular day will be issued from 10:00 a.m.

Q4. Can one person get reserved seat tickets for others?

A4. Yes, it is possible. Since 1 reservation ticket is issued for each admission ticket, please purchase the admission tickets for the number of members of your group. Furthermore, please note that cancellation is not possible and changes cannot be made.

Q5. What size of crowds will we encounter?

A5. Weekdays: The program at 10:30 am usually becomes full shortly after the opening of the museum, and the afternoon program usually becomes full before noon.
Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays: There are visitors lining up before the opening of the museum. In some cases, there are situations where the seats for all programs will be completely full just with the people waiting in line.

Q6. Is it possible to wait for a visitor with a program ticket to cancel?

A6. No, it is not possible. There is no waiting list.

Q7. Are there separate charges?

A7. The fee is included in the admission ticket and, therefore, there will be no separate charges.

Q8. How long is the program?

A8. It is about 20 minutes including entrance and exit time.

Q9. Can wheelchairs enter?

A9. Up to two wheelchairs can enter the theater for a program. For further details, please contact the staff.

Q10. Is entering and exiting possible during the program?

A10. Entering and exiting during the program is prohibited.

Q11. Are there any age limitations?

A11. Since it is a Permanent Exhibition, there are no age limitations. However, during the program, it gets very dark inside the dome, so please be aware when bringing small children along with you.
